Geographic Range it is found in Europe, in north-western Africa, in big islands in the Mediterranean Sea, in Turkey, in the Caucasian area, in part of the Middle East.
Physical Characteristics its cap, its throat and the stripe crossing the abdomen are black. That stripe is larger in the male than in the female. The rest of the head is white, whereas the body is yellow or yellow-green.
Call the male is very noisy, most of all when it is busy delimiting its territory or attracting a female. The call is made of 2-3 repeated syllables.
Behaviour it is a gregarious bird.
Habitat woods, gardens and so on.
Flight it performs acrobatic flight.
Food habits insects, spiders, seeds, fruit (most of all the fruit of the beech).
Nidification the nest is built inside the holes of the trees, made up of moss feathers and plumes. The female is in charge with nest building from the beginning of the spring. It may lay from 3 to 18 eggs most of all in April-June. The incubation lasts 13-14 days and both parents look after their young until they are completely covered with feathers for at least another 40 days after their birth.
