Geographic Range | it is found in Europe, north-western Africa, Lesser Asia, Persia, Caucasian, Palestine. |
Physical Characteristics | the male has a black cap; the sides of the head and the lower part of the body are grey. The female has a brown-reddish cap, the upper part of the body is brown-olive. The young look like the female. The beak and the paws are dark. |
Habitat | woods, parks, gardens, hedges. |
Flight | it performs short flights, following a waving trajectory. |
Food habits | larvae, insects, fruit. |
Migration | the individuals coming from central Europe and heading towards East and North up to Scandinavia are migratory and spend winter in Sub-Saharan Africa and in western Europe (Mediterranean). The individuals living in western and southern areas are resident or partially migratory. |
Nidification | the nest is made up of dry grass and twigs; it is built by the female among bushes. They usually lay from 3 to 5 the eggs, from the end of April, and the incubation, whose responsibility belongs to both parents, lasts about 13 days. The young leave the nest at the age of 10-11 days. |
